One Day At A Time.....

by Jim
(Rockland ME, U.S.)

Hello to all! We have older Goldens--Jed, 12 plus yrs old and Bella's going on 11 yrs.

This is about Jed--great personality, fun loving, good hips and very playful still.

It was 8 months ago I saw it in his lower left jowl--a growth. We had it removed and it was melanoma. Also had the vaccine at that time.

He was fine, had noticed no change at all in this boy before or after his surgery. All good.

One month later.... a growth in his lymph nodes. Yup, it was back, but lungs clear as a bell.

We had surgery once again and by this time I think there was one more shot for the vaccine to complete the total of four.

He has been great for 7 months, then a week ago he had what we thought was maybe a stroke but it was not. At that time, we felt more lymph nodes -- surgery again, and all seems good.

He did have the booster at 6 months; it just seems strange that the first treatment one month after he had surgery, now 1 month after his booster another surgery on the lymph nodes.

His behavior has not changed one bit during these 8 months and I am so grateful he is doing so well.

We love this old man very much and will continue to help him at every turn. So we live one day at a time and gratitude is so present in our hearts.

Bella knows nothing, except Jed goes for long rides once in awhile with dad and she doesn't like that at all.

Our prayers were answered when we first heard, please God let his lungs be clear, and now we have ice cream cones sometimes and other goodies.

I know you all understand and that means so much. Thanks for reading about Jed and here is his photo. I just feel like he'll be around forever, you know :) God bless.......Jim

Nancy's Notes: Jim, thanks for sharing Jed's story with us. It's so hard to see our furry family get sick, but he seems to be taking it all in stride like the great old guy that he is (he's beautiful!) We need to all remember to enjoy each day we're blessed with our special four-legged friends, and to take one day at a time as you are. Our thoughts are with you and your precious Jed.

Passed On
by: Anonymous

Hi,
Well Jed has passed on. It was September 2010.....his attitude and spirit were always as they were his entire life ...til the end. One hind leg stopped working. Within 2 days the other, and on the fifth we had the big party!!!

All his friends came....he had ice cream, ham bones, hot dogs and anything else he desired....then Dr Lee came at the end of the day. He was in my lap as he slipped away and the tears started to flow ......what a friend he was....

Nancy's Note -- I'm so sorry, Jim. I know Jed left a hole in your heart, and we understand. I hope Bella is still with you to comfort you (and for you to comfort HER!). They just never live long enough, do they? Your last party for Jed was a lovely idea. Our thoughts are with you.

I know how you feel and nature is cruel to give us such a short time with these beautiful animals.
