Our Annual Dog Birthday Party

by Sharon
(Canada)

Buttons and His Buddies

Buttons and His Buddies

Buttons has been having birthday parties since our granddaughter was old enough to know what birthdays are. She would arrive with birthday hats and treats for all the puppies present.

Buttons was the first pet we knew his exact birthday, since he was hand picked at 6 weeks old. All our other dogs have come to us from shelters and birth dates are often guessed.

Once the dogs know they are getting treats, and lots of attention, getting the party hats on them is not difficult at all. Both our grandchildren look forward to August 31st every year and come with cameras as well as party bags.

I think it has been a wonderful experience for the children to grow with Buttons and develop such a loving bond with a dog. To our amazement, our 16-year-old granddaughter still wanted to plan Buttons' 14th party. Another two months and Buttons will be celebrating his 15th birthday.

The other Golden in the picture is Toby, now 4-1/2 who we adopted at 10 months old. They bonded right from the beginning and are still best buddies.

The small brown dog is Max, our beloved spaniel mix that we lost this past December at age 16-1/2. Max became Buttons' mother from day one. Max would lie down beside Buttons and put his paws on Buttons as if to say, "Stay there 'til I finish cleaning your teeth!" Max continued to care for Buttons until the last couple of months of his life.

Nancy's Notes: What a wonderful idea, Sharon! It's easy to see that everybody's having a great time helping Buttons celebrate. Thanks for sharing!

Sharon, that's a wonderful event to celebrate each year and you've given Nicole some terrific memories to keep with her forever.

I loved this story!

Through the experience
by: Nicole

This was fun, I am the now-17-year-old girl in the picture. Fun tradition to grow up with, and sad thinking the 15th will probably be the last.
