Sometimes You Get the Dog You Need, Rather Than the One You Want

by Caryl Thatcher
(UK)

I've wanted a Golden Retriever for years. I even had his name picked out...George... like in the cartoon, I was gonna hug him and love him.

But I worked full time, as did Paul, my hubbymate. Paul had a limp but we knew that...

Years later he was diagnosed with Agressive Progressive Muscular Dystrophy.

He stopped working, as he couldn't walk far any more. He got depressed as things progressed.

I gave up work to care for him, as he fell over so much. We became hermits as Paul stopped going out.

Then I suggested we get a pup for me to love and Paul to play with. I was going to go for a Spaniel, as it would be easier for Paul and being a small dog wouldn't bowl him over, yet I yearned for my furball Goldie. Paul said no, it's got to be a Goldie.

We found someone that had 2 pups, both males. Off we drove the 2 hour journey to Birmingham. Such a lovely Irish man was there to greet us.

We were made welcome. Then it was time to meet the pups. Paul was given the white baby boy, and I was given the creamy gold one with dark ears. The white boy, while he was good, didn't seem interested in us -- just his toy.

The pup I had, immediately snuggled into my neck, licking my ear and making those gorgeous puppy sounds. Awhile later, he fell asleep nestled in my arms. This is George, I told Paul.

George demanded laps, kisses, and walks in the garden which progressed to walks outside. Paul suggested he get a mobility scooter so he could come on our walks.

Weeks later I asked Paul to hold George's lead and "walk him." They are a partnershp made in heaven!

Paul has gone from this quiet, withdrawn man into someone who takes George out 3 times a day. We have a wheelchair-accessable car that is big enough for George, us and the scooter. So we load up and go for long walks in the woods.

And at night George snuggles up to me, limpid brown eyes gazing at me, that soft sigh when he closes his eyes and sleeps. We love and we are all loved....life is finally great... Love you, my Golden Angel!

Nancy's Note: What a beautiful story, Caryl! I'm so glad you found George (the dog you both wanted AND needed!), and that he found you. It sounds like you make each other's lives complete. I wish you much continued happiness. Thanks so much for sharing George with us!

The one you need
by: Remingtons mom

Our Goldens have a way of knowing just what we need and when we need it. Their love is always there and in endless supply. They will do anything to please us and live just to make us smile. They are great friends and are always ready to make new friends which is easy for them because of the love that is always shining from their eyes. The most beautiful animal in the world is a Golden, true of heart and soul.

GOLDEN LOVE
by: Shaaron K

I know just what he means. When I lost my two yorkies, I went through a terrible time of depression and was looking for another yorkie. But, I found an ad for a Golden looking for a home. As soon as Rosie walked in my door, she began providing loving therapy and healing for me. Now, I take her to nursing homes to bring her love to others.
