Travel Tips For Pets
Checking out these travel tips for pets before your next vacation can make your travel time--and your stay at your destination--more enjoyable for everyone. Fortunately, most Golden Retrievers are quiet travelers and are delighted to go almost anywhere. They usually love car rides, and generally outgrow any early motion sickness.
Preparation for Pet Friendly TravelsThere's so much to do before your trip. Where do we start? Here are some travel tips for pets that you need to address long before you hit the road.
- Visit your veterinarian a few weeks before your trip. Make sure your pet is in good health and current on all his vaccinations.
- Give your vet a list of your travel destinations, and ask if any additional vaccinations are advisable.
- Be sure to ask your veterinarian if your pet's vaccinations have had time to become effective--some take as long as two weeks.
- Call all the pet friendly motels on your itinerary to make sure your Golden Retriever fits their guidelines.
- Prepare an information sheet for your dog. Include his photo, along with his name, age, breed, sex, identification (owner contact information, and tattoo or microchip information), and any health problems. Having this information on hand will be extremely helpful if he gets lost or if you need someone unfamiliar with your pet to take care of him.

- Favorite toys or blanket
- Vaccination records
- Collar (worn at all times)
- Leash (keep it handy)
- Crate or dog bed
- Dog food and dog treats
- Dog brush and other grooming items

- Lots of fresh water
- Lots of plastic bags for Poop Patrol
Pet Travel Safety TipsWhen you take your Golden Retriever anywhere, safety should be your number one priority. Follow these travel tips for pets to help keep your pooch as safe as possible.
- Make sure your dog has an ID tag on his collar, with his name and your cell phone number on it (and keep your cell phone with you).
- Make a temporary ID tag with a paper key tag and Sharpie permanent marker. Include the telephone number of your hotel and an emergency backup number.
- When you reach your destination, locate a vet who can deal with any emergencies.
- Keep your dog on-leash in unfamiliar places, particularly roadside rest areas. Don't even open the car door until his leash is attached and you have a good hold on it.
- Keep your dog safely restrained in his crate or with a special pet travel harness in the car.
- Never leave your dog unattended in the car, particularly in hot or cold weather.
If you're a member of the American Automobile Association, you can pick up a copy of their AAA pet travel information ("Traveling With Your Pet") at your local AAA office. Always clean up after your dog and leave no indication that the two of you were even there. Dogs would be welcome in more places if all dog owners acted responsibly. Do your part to make sure the places you visit with your dog continue to welcome canine travelers.
